Sexual Misconduct Interactive Resource Guide

For Students

Communicating With Professors

Typically, UVA professors are understanding of emergencies or extenuating circumstances. The best option may be to talk with your professor directly, either after class or during office hours. You can disclose as much or as little as you are comfortable sharing to explain why you need a certain accommodation (e.g. extensions on assignments, rescheduling exams, etc.). Sending an email is the next best option if you are not comfortable talking in-person.

Please know that your professors are mandatory reporters. If you disclose that you were impacted by sexual misconduct to them, then they will share your disclosure with the Title IX Office and the Student Safety & Support Team (SS&ST) will reach out to offer support.

If your professor is unable to provide the accommodations you requested, then SS&ST can assist you.
