Sexual Misconduct Interactive Resource Guide

For Students

What happens if I choose not to move forward with the reporting process?

UVA respects your decision not to move forward with a case, even if you previously submitted a report.

What happens to the report if I choose not to move forward with a case?
  • The report remains on file in most cases, but UVA will not do anything with the information.
  • If another student makes a report about the same person, then you may be contacted and asked to use your original statements and/or participate in the new investigation.

Generally, UVA will only move forward with a case without your participation if a serious threat exists to the UVA community's safety. In that case, we will talk with you about why UVA is moving forward, and you can make decisions about your level of participation in the case.
