Sexual Misconduct Interactive Resource Guide

For Students

Medical Care

The UVA and Charlottesville communities offer many student resources and support services for those impacted by sexual violence. Even if you are not local to Charlottesville, there are resources at UVA and off-Grounds hotlines that can connect you with resources and services in your local area.

If you believe that you were drugged, but do not need medical attention or were not assaulted, many local pharmacies carry over-the-counter drug tests for between $15 and $30.

Some options for medical treatment that involve the preservation of evidence, like a forensic exam, are more effective immediately following an incident of sexual violence.

  • You DO NOT need to report to police or press charges to access any type of medical care, get a forensic exam, or receive support.
  • If you choose to get a forensic exam, it will be stored for two years following collection — you can even contact the Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services in Richmond if you would like the PERK to be stored beyond two years. There is no statute of limitations for sexual assault in Virginia, so you can choose to press charges at any time.
    • You can call the Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services in Richmond, Virginia, at (804) 648-4480.
  • You can accept or decline any part of an exam or suggested treatment.
  • Providers will assist you in making choices about your care.
