Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972 states,

"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."

It is the goal of Title IX to eliminate sexual and gender-based discrimination in educational settings. Title IX prohibits sexual harassment, which includes gender-based harassment and sexual violence, such as relationship violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Under Title IX, schools MUST promptly and equitably investigate sexual assault and harassment or risk their federal funding.

If you have questions about Title IX or believe that a report has not received appropriate attention, contact UVA's Title IX Coordinator by email at [email protected] or by phone at (434) 297-7988. You also can consult the Know Your IX website for a thorough breakdown of Title IX.
